Spotlight FAM Community Member: LibraLives

Libra's journey in monetizing his gaming time started long before Web3 even existed. "I’ve been monetizing my gaming time since 1999, selling EverQuest platinum to my high-school classmates," he says, emphasizing that he’s been preparing for this moment his entire life. His transition to Web3 gaming felt like a natural evolution. By 2017, Libra was fully committed to crypto, and in 2013, he made the leap to pursue gaming as a career. Big Time provided a major push into Web3 gaming, and his success in the game enabled him to buy a house in early 2024—a significant milestone in his journey. This achievement marked the culmination of his gaming savvy and dedication to monetizing his passion.

What captivated Libra about Web3 gaming was the opportunity to combine two passions—gaming and investing—without having to constantly analyze charts. "I’m good with charting, but I’m better with gaming," he admits. The freedom to monetize his time in a dynamic and interactive way made Web3 gaming stand out from the traditional gaming experience. For Libra, gaming has always been about more than just entertainment; it’s also a means to leverage his skills and knowledge for real rewards.

Libra attributes a lot of his learning to the support and shared experience of others in the community. He singles out killersaints1313 as a wealth of information about gaming as a career. He also points to the value of the FAM Guild, describing it as a collective where players can learn from each other and help each other avoid pitfalls. "Think of it like a liquidity pool that weeds out the projects likely to rug you," Libra explains, emphasizing how shared experiences help safeguard against poor investments. The insights he gained through others' experiences have been crucial in navigating the complexities of Web3 gaming.

The birth of Libra’s first daughter in 2015 marked a significant shift in his career. He was already running a small business while diving into the crypto space, but the motivation to be at home with his children made the decision to pursue Web3 gaming full-time an easy one. He describes his early approach as casual, becoming more committed as his family grew. "I like to be home with my kids," he notes, emphasizing how family has been a driving force behind many of his decisions, including his involvement in the Web3 gaming community.

While Libra is heavily involved in Web3 as an investor, he’s more reserved when discussing specifics due to the confidential nature of venture capital. Instead, he focuses on the friendships he’s built and the "dead weight" he’s shed along the way. He has also been deeply affected by projects like UNDEAD BLOCKS, which taught him about resilience. Despite the project being "rugged by a Vietnamese team that held rights to the IP," Libra has continued following its journey, impressed by the recovery efforts under new leadership. It was a reminder that even well-intentioned projects can face significant challenges, but resilience can pave the way for a comeback.

When it comes to the future of Web3 gaming, Libra sees mainstream adoption as the game-changer on the horizon. He’s noticed the space still resembles a "wild-west infancy" stage and believes that investing in infrastructure rather than individual projects is the safest approach right now. Libra sees infrastructure as the backbone of Web3 gaming’s success, and his current investments reflect this belief. He knows that as the industry matures, a strong foundation will be critical to long-term stability.

Libra offers candid advice for those new to Web3 gaming: "Every project is different, and you might be surprised if you develop an expectation of professionalism—some companies are just some dude in his underwear." He advises beginners to join the FAM Discord, find a mentor, and be prepared to learn quickly. It’s easy to be misled by flashy projects, but Libra believes that a strong community and genuine growth are the key indicators of a project worth investing in. His experience has shown him that adaptability, resilience, and skepticism are invaluable traits for anyone diving into the space.

Balancing gaming with personal life is something Libra has approached with his own unique style. "I’m not a great advocate for a balanced lifestyle," he admits, mentioning that he only sleeps two hours a night and runs numerous side hustles. Beyond gaming, he dedicates time to his family and a small family business that produces freeze-dried fruits and candies. Libra uses tools like Google Calendar to stay organized and is transparent about the toll of burnout, acknowledging that finding a healthy balance is still a work in progress. "Time is money, my friends. Welcome to Web3!" he concludes, embodying the relentless drive that has taken him this far.
